Who We Are

Philip Brain Associates Ltd have been providing vocational competence consultancy & assessment to the Extractive & Mineral Processing sector for almost 25 years. We have written Qualifications & National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Health, Safety & Environmental Management qualifications at levels 4, 6 & 7. We have been delivering MPQC qualifications commercially for 20 years, longer than any other accredited centre. In 2019 Philip Brain Associates Ltd launched EMPI Awards an independent Awarding Organisation for the Extractive & Mineral Processing Industries.

Philip Brain is a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv), Incorporated Engineer (IEng), Fellow of the Institute of Materials Minerals & Mining (FIMMM), and a Fellow of the Institute of Quarrying (FIQ).

Having initially qualified as an industrial chemist, Philip has worked for a number of quarrying & building materials producers at various levels of managerial responsibility within the UK and overseas as Chief Technical Officer of the Nigerian Mining Corporation.

Philip was Production Director of two building materials companies in North Wales & the Midlands and in 1994 formed Philip Brain Associates. Philip is a qualified assessor, internal verifier and external verifier.

Gavin has a degree in Business Studies, is an Associate Member of the Society for Education & Training (ASET) and is a Fellow of the Institute of Quarrying (FIQ), currently serving on the IQ Council & British Aggregate Association (BAA) Health & Safety Committee.

Gavin started assessing vocational qualifications in 1998 and specialises in the development of assessors and verifiers working in practical contexts within heavy industry. Gavin is also a qualified Internal Verifier and External Verifier, having worked with a number of Awarding Organizations including:
